California is located on the west coast of the United States. The name "California" came from a romance book that was published in the 1500's. It was about an island paradise near the Indies where beautiful Queen "Califia" ruled over a country of beautiful Amazons rich with pearls and gold. As the story goes, men were only allowed there one day a year to help perpetuate the race. Cortez and his men, arriving in 1535 on in Baja California (Mexico), thought they found the island because they found abundant pearls.

It is by far the most populated state in the U.S., as well as the most physically diverse, with the highest and the lowest points in the lower 48 states located within 150 miles of each other.

As one of the most demographically diverse states in the nation, California is a dominant force in American culture as well as the nation's economy. If California were an independent nation, it would have the sixth largest economy in the world (after the rest of the U.S., Japan, Germany, Britain and France).

It has some of the nation's largest cities, including Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, is responsible for many legal and technological innovations, and is home to the Hollywood movie business.

In the center and east of the state are the "Sierra Nevada" Mountains (which means Snowy Range in Spanish), containing the highest peak in the contiguous lower 48 states, Mount Whitney, at 14,595 feet. Also located in the Sierra Nevada are the world famous Yosemite National Park and a deep freshwater lake, Lake Tahoe, the largest lake in the state by volume.

     Robert Frost - One of America's leading 20th-century poets and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize
     Jack London - Author of many novels about the vast Western frontiers, such as Call of the Wild
     George Lucas - Filmmaker and the mastermind behind the Star Wars features
     Marilyn Monroe - Considered one of the most famous woman of the 20th Century
     Richard M. Nixon - 37th President of the U.S
     Sally K. Ride - Astronaut and first American woman in space
     John Steinbeck - Author known for famous works such as Tortilla Flat and Of Mice and Men
     Eldrick "Tiger" Woods - Famous Golfer
     William Randolph Hearst – Publishing Mogul
     And, Walt Disney, while not born in CA, lived in Hollywood for much of his life.
