The Hawaiian Islands were originally settled by Polynesian immigrants more than 1000 years ago yet remained unknown to Europeans until Captain James Cook landed there in 1778. King Kamehameha I united the the islands under his rule by 1819 as the Kingdom of Hawaii. Admitted on August 21, 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States. Situated 2500 miles from California, it is actually the southernmost part of America and is home to approximately 1.3 million people. The climate of Hawaii is typical of tropical areas. It is well-known for being warm and inviting year-round.

The history of Hawaiii can be traced through a succession of important industries: sandalwood, whaling, sugarcane, pineapple, military, tourism, and education.
